Dog Information and Overview:
Shane is a very bright, very high-energy youngster, best suited for a home interested in agility, herding or similar activities to hold his interest. He spends most of the day outdoors on 5 acres playing and running with his foster family and various giant breed dogs. Shane entered foster care at around 4 months of age and is about 9 months old now. His time has been spent learning obedience commands, house training, and socializing with people and other animals, including the foster’s raccoons, pot-bellied pigs, donkeys and other dogs. He’s doing very well with commands to sit, down, and heel on leash. House training is nearly complete but he will run to his kennel and potty there if he isn’t let outside right away after the family has been gone awhile. This is the result of having been trained during the several first months of his life to use his crate for that purpose, so re-training has been necessary. He is90-95% improved at going to the back door and waiting instead of heading right for the crate. He doesn’t make a mess in the house, and is good when left home alone for several hours. Occasionally he will dribble urine when he’s especially excited, such as when the family comes home after being away for a few hours. The things he loves most are jumping, and water, water, water! His love of water ranges from small puddles and lawn sprinklers to a river or lake. If he discovers a glorious puddle on the ground he’ll dig a little, although he isn’t a digger otherwise. He also prefers jumping over things rather than going around them; this includes water buckets and pigs that are moving too slowly to suit him. He also jumps on his foster when he’s especially excited but training is successfully stopping that habit. Shane is quite the charmer, and although he exhibits the usual Belgian Sheepdog reserve, he quickly warms to new friends and has been with children as young as age 5. His foster family says that what is most special about him is that he taught their blind Mastiff how to find his way through rough terrain on the property and make his way back to the house on his own.
